Common beginner questions (Q&A)

Here are the spots where new players most often get stuck. The game barely explains most of them, so check here when you are not sure what to do.

How do I open a door with musical notes on it?

Doors decorated with musical notes do not use keys or switches. Instead, you open them by standing right next to the door and playing a specific melody on an instrument. Any instrument works. The Harp, Flute, Drumkit, and others can be crafted at the Music Workbench, and the Ocarina sometimes turns up in ancient crates and pots.

The melody depends on where the door is. With the default keyboard layout (Z through M play the notes C through B), known melodies include "C N M B C N M" for doors in the Undergrounds, "N C N C X" for the Clay Caves, and "B B N V B X V B" for the Forgotten Ruins. Behind these doors you will find chests and pedestals holding keys, rings, and other loot.

What are the animals that don't attack me? (Raising cattle)

Animals that stay calm when you approach are cattle. If you raise them instead of killing them, they eat food and give you products such as Meadow Milk, Wool, and Dodo Eggs. What they eat depends on the species: some eat plants (crops or mushrooms), some eat bugs, and some eat kelp. Hold their favorite food in your hand and they will follow you, then eat it once they get close.

Besides hand-feeding, they will also eat food placed on the ground or put in a Feeding Tray. An animal can store up to 4 pieces of food in its belly, and every 2 pieces produce one product. Interact with an animal to check how hungry it is or to give it a name.

When two animals of the same species have each eaten at least 30 times, are both full, and have breeding turned on, they will have a baby if they are next to each other. Babies don't produce anything, but they grow into adults after eating 8 times.

Feeding can also be automated. For plant eaters, a common setup is to make mushrooms break as soon as they grow, then carry them to the feeding tray with a Robot Arm and Conveyor Belts. Bug eaters can be fed Blackbugs, which sometimes pop out when you break wooden walls, or bugs caught with a Critter Catcher.

Be careful: plant eaters will also eat crops from nearby fields (only fully grown ones). Cattle can be attacked by enemies and do not respawn when killed, so it is safest to keep them behind a fence. To move them somewhere else, either lead them with a Leash or carry them in a Cattle Transport Box (single use).

What do I do with the eggs I find? (Hatching pets)

Unusual eggs that come from chests or merchants, such as the Lively Egg or Arcane Egg, are pet eggs. Power an Egg Incubator (8 Copper Bars and 8 Glass Pieces, crafted at the Copper Workbench) with electricity and put the egg inside. After 30 minutes it becomes a cracked egg. Use the cracked egg from your hand and the pet hatches. If the power goes out, hatching pauses too.

Pets level up when you feed them treats such as Pet Pellets, Rare Candy, and Beast Boosters. On the way to Lv.10 they learn one talent (a pet skill) every 2 levels, for 5 talents in total. Which talents can appear is fixed for each pet, so if you want a strong one, also read our guide on hunting for Triple Trouble pets.

How do I use Slime Oil to get a merchant? (Building a merchant room)

Summoning items such as the Slime Oil Idol make a merchant move in when you place them in a livable room. A room counts as livable when:

  • It is fully enclosed by walls with no gaps (doors count as walls)
  • The enclosed area is 64 tiles or smaller (for example 8×8)
  • There is a Bed inside
  • There is at least one empty floor tile where the merchant can stand

Lights and doors are not required. The merchant may not show up right away after the room is finished, so give it some time. The pairings are: Slime Oil Idol for the Bearded Merchant, Pile of Chum Idol for the Fishing Merchant, Seasonal Calendar for the Seasonal Merchant, Mysterious Idol for the Cloaked Merchant, Nuclear Battery Idol for the Brave Merchant, and Void Idol for the Otherworldly Merchant. The Seasonal Merchant changes outfit and stock with each season. You can check what every merchant sells in the merchant list.

À quoi servent les objets de valeur ?

Valuables are mainly items you sell to merchants for Ancient Coins. Ancient Coins are used to buy from merchants and to upgrade your gear. You can also display valuables on pedestals as a collection, and some seasonal-event valuables are used as crafting materials.

If valuables keep filling up your inventory, carry a Small Valuable Pouch (medium and large versions also exist). Valuables you pick up go straight into the pouch's dedicated slots.

What are enemy figurines for? (The Materializer)

Figurines such as the Slime Figurine, which enemies occasionally drop, are furniture you can display in your rooms. Figurines with a brown base (non-boss enemies) can also be placed in a Materializer. Power it with electricity and it creates copies of that enemy one at a time. The copies have the same strength and behavior as the real enemy but drop no items. Instead, they are useful for training skills such as melee, range combat, magic, summoning, and vitality.

The Materializer cannot be crafted. You have to pick one up from places like the Alien Challenge Arena in The Shimmering Frontier and bring it home. Boss figurines cannot go in a Materializer. To fight a boss again, use that boss's summoning item (check each boss's page from the boss list).
