How to cook, and the best food combos for each goal
You cook by putting two ingredients into a Cooking Pot. Golden crops turn into the rare version of a dish (effects ×1.25).
For fighting with melee weapons: Golden Pinegrapple + Tornis Kingfish
For fighting with ranged weapons: Golden Pewpaya + Tornis Kingfish
For fighting with magic: Golden Sunrice + Tornis Kingfish
For fighting with minions: Golden Lunacorn + Greenhorn Pico
For healing: Atlantean Worm Heart + Starlight Nautilus
How Cooking Works and How Effects Are Decided
- A dish is made from two ingredients in the Cooking Pot. Each ingredient has separate effects for when it is eaten raw and when it is cooked; the dish gets the cooked effects of both ingredients.
- Only the higher value of the same effect counts. When both ingredients have the same effect, only the higher one is kept, so combine ingredients with different effects. The exception is a permanent max health bonus: those add together.
- Rare and epic dishes are stronger. In the game's program a rare dish has effects ×1.25 and an epic dish ×1.5. Permanent effects (such as permanent max health) are not boosted.
- Golden crops are stronger. With the Gardening talent "Expert gardener", planted crops sometimes turn golden (golden crops). Each golden crop is linked to the rare version of its dish, and a dish made only from golden crops gets another ×1.15. Putting one golden crop in the pot is enough to make the dish rare; a rare ingredient such as a rare fish or Shiny Larva Meat does not do the same.
- Cooking skill can give an extra dish. In the game's words, grabbing cooked food from the cooking pot “increases the chance of gaining additional cooked food” as the Cooking skill rises. The talent "Master chef" gives a chance “for additional food gained from cooking to be rare”. It only upgrades that extra dish, not every meal.
- Eating two dishes with the same effect. Different effects can run at the same time, but the same effect never stacks. A new dish replaces the active effect only if its full duration is at least as long, even when its value is lower, so a weaker dish of the same length can overwrite a stronger one. Eat your everyday food first and your strongest dish last.
Multipliers and links between ingredients and dishes are read from the game files of Core Keeper 1.3.0.6 (ingredient prefabs, Conf/Talents, the official English skill text and the constants in the game's program). The rule that the same effect does not add up, permanent bonuses, the golden-crop rule for rare dishes and how a new meal replaces an active effect are based on the Core Keeper Wiki (Fandom) page Cooking (CC BY-SA 3.0); it could not be checked in the game data.
