Which fish are best?
To fish, hold a fishing rod, press and hold to cast, and press again to reel in when the bobber sinks. Casting into a bubbling fish school gets a bite faster and always gives a fish.
Each location has a minimum fishing value; below it you catch nothing. Bring the rod from the table below (for gear, see best fishing gear).
For fighting with melee weapons: Tornis Kingfish
For fighting with magic: Tornis Kingfish
For raising health and defense: Jasper Angle Fish
For healing: Starlight Nautilus
Which fish you catch depends on the location (biome). The tables below list every fish and its chance for each location. Fish give stronger effects as cooking ingredients than when eaten raw.
How to Fish (Casting, Fish Schools, Minigame)
- Hold a fishing rod: equip a rod in your hand (all fishing rods).
- Press and hold, then release to cast: the longer you hold, the farther you cast (0.7 to 3 tiles; effects that raise “fishing rod throw range” extend it).
- Press when the bobber sinks: reel in on the bite to catch a fish or an item. You only have a few seconds after the bite, so react quickly.
- Casting into a fish school (bubbling spot) is faster and always gives a fish. A bite takes 7–16 s in normal water and 3–5 s in a fish school.
- Outside schools, you get a fish 40% of the time and an item 60%. Effects such as “chance to get a valuable or other non-fish item on the hook” (from lures and gear) change these odds. If you are after treasure and other non-fish loot, stay away from fish schools, since a school always gives a fish.
- A higher fishing value means faster bites. At twice the required value the wait is halved (3.5–8 s in normal water); it never gets shorter than half.
- The old minigame is still available: turn on “Legacy fishing minigame” in the game settings. In it, reel in while the fish rests and let go of the button while it struggles, so the line doesn't snap. How each fish struggles is set per fish in the game's Conf/Fishing files.
- What cancels a cast: putting the rod away or moving your character stops fishing (including the minigame). Opening your inventory does not.
Fishing Value and Fishing Rod Needed per Location
What you catch depends on the type of water the bobber lands in and the biome you are standing in. If your fishing value is too low you catch nothing, so use at least the rod in the table (fishing rods cannot be upgraded).
| Location | Fishing needed | Rod that is enough | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Undergrounds (normal water) | 20 | ||
| The Clay Caves (normal water) | 20 | ||

| The Desert of Beginnings (normal water) | 220 | With the Octarine rod (202), add 18 more from gear, food or skills | |

| The Shimmering Frontier (normal water) and shimmering water | 260 | ||
| The Passage (normal water) and grimy water | 280 | ||
| Breaker's Reach (normal water) | 20 | Uses the same fishing table as The Undergrounds |
The game shows no names for the water types (acid, mold, sea, shimmering, grimy); these are descriptive names. Required fishing values, bite times, the 40% fish chance and the cast range are read from the game's program (Core Keeper 1.3.0.6: the fishing table and the fishing state), and the rods' fishing values from their prefabs. The reaction window after a bite, what cancels a cast and the legacy minigame tip are from the Core Keeper Wiki (Fandom) page Fishing (game 1.3, based on the Explorer's Guide; CC BY-SA 3.0).
Catch chances are calculated from the game's drop tables (Conf/Loot, the …Fishes and …FishingLoot tables) of Core Keeper 1.3.0.6, following the game's own roll logic.
