How to place and remove map markers, change their symbol, color and label, and how many you can place.

Data: the game files (version 1.3.0.6)

Summary

How to place a pin (marker) on the map

  1. Place it on the full map

Open the full map, point at the spot and press the place-map-marker button. Press it again on the same spot to remove the marker.

  2. 8×10

    Symbol, color and label

Choose from 8 symbols and 10 colors, and add a label that shows when you hover over the marker (since version 1.3.0.1).

  3. 512

    Up to 512 markers

You cannot place more than that; the game tells you that no more markers can be placed.

How to place and remove map pins (markers)

  1. Open the full map: markers are placed on the full map, not the minimap.
  2. Move the cursor to the spot you want to mark.
  3. Press the place-map-marker button: the marker uses the symbol and color of the preset you have selected.
  4. To remove one: point at the marker and press the same button again.

Anyone in the world can place markers. Since version 1.0.1.0, nearby markers also show on the minimap. On a controller, you can cycle through markers with the next/previous map marker buttons.

Changing a marker's symbol, color and label

  • The marker picker has 5 presets.
  • Right-click a preset to customize it: pick from 8 symbols and 10 colors and set the label shown when you hover over the marker.
  • New markers use the settings of the preset you have selected.

Example: give ore boulders, merchants, fishing spots, bosses and "come back later" spots different symbols or colors so they are easy to tell apart.

How many markers you can place, and clearing them all

You can place up to 512 markers (temporary ping markers do not count). If you try to place more, the game tells you the limit has been reached. When you clear all your markers at once, the game asks you to confirm first.

For reading the map itself, see how to use the map.
