How critical hits work
×1.5
Crits start at 1.5×
The base multiplier is 1.5×. +50% critical hit damage makes it 2×, +100% makes it 2.5× (added, not multiplied).
100%
Chance caps at 100%
Critical hit chance is added together, and the game rolls a number from 0 to 99 against it, so anything above 100% is wasted.
Average multiplier
Average = 1 + chance × (multiplier − 1). With 50% chance and +100% damage, that is 1.75×.
How critical hits work (chance and multiplier)
- Chance: critical hit chance from gear, food, talents and so on is added together (+20% and +15% make +35%). The game crits when a random whole number from 0 to 99 is below your chance, so 100% always crits.
- Multiplier: crit multiplier = 1.5 + extra critical hit damage ÷ 100. +25% and +35% make +60%, for 2.1× (they do not multiply).
- Character screen: the critical hit damage shown on the character screen already includes the base +50%. When you use the formula above, count that 50% only once.
- What a crit cannot do: a critical hit still has to get past the enemy's defenses. It does not ignore dodges, shields or damage immunity. Thorns damage never crits and ignores critical hit damage bonuses.
- Damage to burning enemies: "critical hit damage against burning targets" is only added when the enemy is burning at the moment of the hit.
To compare damage including crits, see the damage formula.
Temporary critical hit boosts
| Source | Effect (game text) | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Scarlet Armor Set (3 pieces) | Killing an enemy increases critical hit chance by 3%, stacks up to 5 times | 8 s (each kill refreshes every stack) |
| Hunter Armor Set (2 pieces) | +15% critical hit chance after standing still for 3 sec | — |
| Ivy Set (2 pieces) | +25% critical hit chance for a short duration after successfully applying poison | 5 s |
| Ranged talent "Weakness detection" | 2% chance on ranged hit to increase critical hit chance by 50% for a short duration (2% per point, up to 10% at 5 points) | 3 s |
The game itself only says these last "for a short duration"; the seconds in the table are from the Core Keeper Wiki (Fandom).
- Not on the triggering hit: the poison (Ivy) and Weakness detection boosts start after the hit that triggered them has already rolled its crit.
- Refresh, not stack: triggering them again resets the timer instead of adding a second copy. The two can be active together (+75% in total, still capped at 100%).
- Projectiles keep their chance: a bow or gun shot carries the crit chance you had when it was fired, so a shot fired during the boost keeps it even if the boost runs out before it lands.
