Iron Ore Boulder notes

  • Mining it requires a Crude Drill or Drill on one side of the boulder, connected to power.
  • Several drills can be placed around a boulder, and each one speeds up ore output.
  • Up to eight drills fit around one boulder, two per side.
  • Output depends on drill type and count, layout, and whether hits overlap on the same boulder tile.
  • More drills raise total output, but the increase gets a little smaller each time.
  • Once the drills have power, the boulder shakes and clinks with every hit.
  • A mined-out boulder breaks and disappears.
  • On the map, an ore boulder shows up as a solid 2×2 square.
  • Point a Crude Drill or Drill at the boulder and connect it to a generator, adding Electrical Wire wherever needed.
  • Before building collection, confirm that the drill is powered and ore appears behind it.
  • Check that both drilling and collection work before adding more drills.
  • A jammed collection route is not fixed by adding drills.
  • Eight is the number of positions around the boulder, not the number of drills needed to start.
  • More drills increase output from that boulder, though each adds a bit less.
  • Use the drilling rate tables to decide how to spread your equipment.
  • The Furnace, Smelter Kiln and Fury Forge all smelt ore into bars, but each takes different ores, so match the smelter to the ore.
  • Furnace: Copper Ore, Iron Ore and Tin Ore.
  • Smelter Kiln: Gold Ore, Scarlet Ore and Octarine Ore.
  • Fury Forge: Galaxite Ore, Solarite Ore, Pandorium Ore and Relucite Ore.
  • The Robot Arm has to face the correct way to load ore into a smelter.
  • A smelter runs automatically once it holds ore it accepts.
  • No ore: check that there is power and the drill faces the boulder.
  • Do not judge a new setup after a few seconds; compare it with the drilling rate tables.
  • Ore building up behind the drill: check the belt direction, the Robot Arm's direction and power, and free space at the destination.
  • Ore reaches the smelter but is not processed: check that the smelter supports that ore.
  • The three smelters each process a different set of ores.
  • Extra drills did not speed things up much: each added drill helps less.
  • Layout and overlapping hits also affect mining speed.
  • The boulder vanished: it has been mined out.
  • Move the mining setup to another boulder.
